Ishpeming, MI - David F. Lawrence, age 82, of 12110 Co Rd PG Ishpeming, passed away on Thursday, October 28, 2021, following a courageous 6-year battle with Mantle Cell Lymphoma. He had been at the Trillium Hospice House in Marquette in the loving care of his family and the UP Home Health and Hospice.
David was born in Marquette on July 24, 1939, a son of the late Esther W. (Hanson) and Frank R. Lawrence. He was a graduate of the National Mine High School. David served in the United States Navy from 1958 till 1962 stationed in Norfolk, VA and aboard the USS Mullinnix. Upon his honorable discharge, he returned to this area. David worked for the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Co. for 34 years, retiring on Jan. 31, 2000, while at Cliffs he worked in various locations including the Ore Improvement Plant, Tilden Mine and retired from the Empire Mine as a crane operator.
David was a member of the Pioneer Kiwanis Club for several years, enjoying building ramps for those in need. He will be remembered as a skilled carpenter and enjoyed tinkering with his many projects. He loved camping in his 5 th wheel and was a member of the over-the-hilltoppers club, along with snowmobiling, four-wheeling, traveling, and especially spending time with his grandchildren. David was often seen on his daily walks, which usually encompassed five miles. Dave also enjoyed cutting, splitting, and stacking wood every summer and fall; the neighbors knew what time of year it was when they heard the log splitter running. Dave was a huge Green Bay Packer and Michigan Wolverine fan.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years Beverly J. (Wood) Lawrence of Ishpeming whom he married on Oct. 11, 1963, and was the love of his life; two daughters, Pam (Scott) Nicholas of Wrightstown, WI; Michele (Jeff) Kertscher of Ishpeming; two sons, Larry (special friend Sara Remick) Lawrence of Ishpeming; Robert (Gail Sippola) Lawrence of Ishpeming; sister, Beverly (Albert) Hardin of Negaunee; brother-in-law – Howard "David" (Diane) Wood of Ishpeming; five grandchildren, Ashley (Nicholas) Brittnacher, Courtney Emanuelson, Tyler Nicholas, Cody Emanuelson, Katie Emanuelson; great grandchildren - Hunter, Isaiah, Ella, Silas; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will greet relatives and friends from 12:00 until 1:00PM on Wednesday, November 3, 2021, at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home where Naval Military Honors will be accorded at 1:00PM. Interment will take place at the Ishpeming Cemetery.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Huffman and Marcie for all your exceptional care over the many years and for being not just dad's doctor but also a good "friend." Also, Thank You to the acute care staff at UP Health System Bell and Trillium House as well as U.P. Home Health and Hospice for providing comfort and wonderful care.
