Obituary
Ishpeming- David J. Corkin, age 73 of 572 Duncan Ave. Ishpeming, passed away Friday, June 01, 2012 at his home while under the loving care of his family and Lake Superior Hospice.
David was born June 23, 1938 in Ishpeming to Albert & Hettie (Sibley) Corkin. He was a graduate of Ishpeming High School, class of 1957 and attended Northern Michigan University. Dave served his country in the United States Army. Before working for CCI, Dave worked at LS&I Railroad and the Miracle Center IGA.
Dave spent 35 years working for Cleveland Cliffs, starting at the Republic Mine, later to the Tilden Mine and retired from the Empire Mine in 2000 as a crusher operator. Dave was active with the Ishpeming Ski Club where he served as treasurer for 48 years and was a member of the Ishpeming ELKS Lodge #447 for 46 years. He was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church where he sang in the choir, was involved with pasty making and served on various committees. He enjoyed playing cribbage in the Ishpeming Cribbage League and spending time at "Camp Bryan" with his family and Thursday card crew. He enjoyed his daily "coffee clutch" with the guys at Buck's. Dave loved being a grandpa and spending time with his grandchildren who meant the world to him. He was an avid sports fan and loved cheering on his grandkids, the Hematites, and the Tigers.
Dave is survived by his wife Bonnie (Paakola) Corkin, whom he married on August 3, 1968, 2 children: Amy (Steve) Perry of Dexter, MI and Scott (Melissa) Corkin of Ishpeming, a sister Carolyn (Joseph) Giguere of Grand Rapids, MI and a brother Tom Corkin of Ann Arbor, 5 grandchildren: Lindsay, Aaron and John Corkin, Kira & Chloe Perry, 5 nieces: Ann Fierek, Jill Morton, Cathy Kober, Linda Kainulainen, and Shanon Paakola. 7 nephews: Daniel Kainulainen Jr., Dean Paakola, Jaren Paakola, Jonathan Paakola, Jason Venezia, Shawn Venezia, and Todd Williams. Other survivors include: mother in law Gladys (Paakola) Marketty, sister in law: Sandy (Tony) Venezia, Wendy (Dan) Kainulainen, brothers in law: Jerry (Johanna) Paakola, Dale (Mike) Paakola. Dave was preceded in death by his parents, nephew Steven Giguere, father in law Arne Paakola and sister in law June Corkin.
Funeral Services for Dave will be held at 5:00pm on Tuesday, June 5th at the Wesley United Methodist Church in Ishpeming with Rev. Scott Lindenberg officiating. Interment will take place in the Ishpeming Cemetery. The family will greet relatives and friends on Tuesday from 2:00pm until the time of service at 5:00pm at the Wesley United Methodist Church where the Ishpeming ELKS Lodge #447 will conduct a memorial service at 2:30pm.
Pallbearers will be Jerry Valenti, Glenn Garrett, Roxie Lawson, Otto Luoma, Bob Betts, Bob Chard and Nick Joseph.
