Ishpeming- David Martin Ackland, Sr., age 84, longtime Ishpeming Township resident passed away on Thursday, May 20, 2021 at Marquette County Medical Care Facility with his wife Kathleen and son Brian by his side.
David was born in Sioux Center, Iowa on March 28, 1937, a son of the late Leonard L. and Mildred K. (Jensen) Ackland. Dave served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War.
Dave worked for Cleveland Cliffs for 10 years and retired as a civilian electrician from the US Federal Government after 30 years.
Dave loved fishing, skiing in his younger years, and cutting firewood. He enjoyed spending time with his kids and grandkids, Sunday dinners with family and visiting with close friends. He was a caretaker for his wife for the past 12 years. His faith was especially important to him, he was a member of the Eastwood Apostolic Lutheran Church.
Dave is survived by his wife Kathleen M. (Heikkinen) Ackland, whom he married on Oct 24, 1959, 4 daughters, Janet Carlson, of Minneapolis,
Diane (Timothy) Markham, of Greer, SC, Carol (Braun) Ogea, of Manchester, IA, and Sarah (David) Tackman, of Ishpeming, a son, Brian (Nora) Ackland, of Champion, daughter in law Lisa Ackland of Negaunee, a brother Leonard (Cheryl) Ackland of DeKalb, IL, 24 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, son David Jr., and 4 sisters.
A visitation will be held from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm on Monday May 24, 2021 at the Bjork and Zhulkie Funeral Home.
A graveside service will be held at 1:30 pm on Monday May 24, 2021 at the Ishpeming Cemetery with Pastor D. Michael Carriere officiating.
Honorary pallbearers will be John Janofski, Ken Eckloff, Joe Pelkola and Bob Edwards.
Memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer's Association at alz/gmc.org in memory of David Ackland.
