Ishpeming – David A. Niemi, age 72, of 600 E. High St., Apt 2, passed away on Thursday, April 6, 2017 at UP Health System Marquette.

David was born February 5, 1945 in Hancock, MI the son of the late Alfred and Bernice (Maki) Niemi. He grew up in Toivola, MI prior entering the United States Army where he served as a paratrooper. He moved to Ishpeming following his honorable discharge from the Army. Dave worked for the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Co. as a welder at the Tilden Mine for 23 years.

Survivors include his wife of the past 24 years, Joan M. Niemi of Ishpeming, daughter Gina Niemi of Chicago, IL, step-daughter Agnes (Joseph) Szwarek of Odanah, WI, step-sons – Roland (Becky) Smart of Neopit, WI and Robert Smart of New Lisbon, WI, a brother Stephen Manninen of Houghton, several grandchildren including Dakota and Joseph Szwarek, nephews Richard and Peter Holmes, special friend AJ Tousignant and his canine companion Boygae. He was preceded in death by a sister Alice Gauthier.

A memorial gathering to celebrate Dave's life will be held on Wednesday, April 12, 2017 at 5:00pm at 600 E. High St., Lower Apt. Ishpeming.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Niemi Family at the TruNorth Federal Credit Union 1419 N Second St., Ishpeming, MI 49849.
