Champion- Darryl Paul Hamel, age 65 passed away Wednesday, March 28, 2018 at his home while in the loving care of his family and UP Home Health and Hospice after a courageous battle with ALS.

Paul was born May 1, 1952 in Ishpeming to Patricia (Duhame) and the late Arthur "Bucko" Hamel.  He graduated from Ishpeming High School, class of 1970.  Paul served his country in the U.S. Marine Corp during the Vietnam War.

Paul and his father Bucko owned a railroad salvage company for many years.  He later operated his own company, Paul Hamel Excavating.  Paul enjoyed his work, which included building ponds and roads, moving gravel and dirt, and teaching his skill to the next generation.  He also enjoyed riding his motorcycle and raising farm animals.  Paul was an honorary member of the Champion Twp. Volunteer Fire Department, which he served with for 30 years.

Paul is survived by his wife Cheryl (LaMere) Hamel, whom he married on June 23, 1972, 2 children: Brad (Alanna) Hamel and their children: Andrew and Arwen, Tina (Paul) Vos and their children: Camielle and Caydence, his mother Pat Hamel, sisters and brothers: Susan (Richard) Thibeault, John (Susan) Hamel, Mark (Natalie) Hamel, Merry (Ray) Ringuette, Jeff Hamel, Leslie (Roger) Herman, and Becky (Donnie) Heliste, his mother in law Julianne LaMere, along with too many nieces and nephews to mention by name.  Paul was preceded in death by his father Arthur Hamel and his father in law Wallace LaMere.

Paul's family will greet relatives and friends from 10:00am-12:00 noon on Saturday, March 31, 2018 at the Bjork and Zhulkie Funeral Home in Ishpeming where a prayer service will be held at 12:00 noon with Sister Margey Schmelzle presiding.

A luncheon will follow the service at the Champion Township Fire Hall.
