Obituary

Lake Havasu City, AZ – Clifford Loyd "Kip" Mercier, age 92, longtime Michigamme resident, passed away on Saturday February 9, 2008 at his home in Arizona, where he had spent the past three winters.

Kip was born December 15, 1915 in Negaunee the son of the late Clifford and Adeline (Dahlberg) Mercier. He attended St. Paul's Catholic School in Negaunee for many years and was a graduate of Michigamme High School, Class of 1933. Kip worked as an underground miner for North Range Mining Co., Inland Steel Co. and Cleveland Cliffs Iron Co. at various mines and retired from the CCI Research Lab in Ishpeming.

Kip was a former member of the Michigamme School Board. He served as fire chief for the Michigamme-Spurr Township Volunteer Fire Department. Kip also served as a trustee of the Michigamme Township Board and was former President of the Michigamme Lions Club.

Clifford was a former member of St. Agnes Catholic Church in Michigamme, and was presently a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Champion. Kip enjoyed hunting, fishing, visiting with friends and family, but most of all, he enjoyed working in his workshop.

Surviving Kip are his second wife Lorraine whom he married January 9, 1999, a daughter: Rosemarie (Ed) Bentti of Michigamme, MI, son: Robert (Mary) Mercier of Chicago, IL and Michigamme, MI, a sister Cathy Joan Boudreau of Escanaba, MI, step children: James (Deeanne) Tapio, Robert (Louise) Tapio, Charlene Tapio, David (Judy) Tapio, Donald (Anne) Tapio, Bruce (Denise) Tapio, Debra (Thomas) Hoffoss, Dana (Susan) Tapio, Jon (Kimberly) Tapio, Michelle (Michael) Strabley, grandchildren: Catherine (Timothy) Bulera, Christopher (Michele) Bentti, Dr. Jean Louise (Jeremy) Mercier Smith, great grandchildren: Lucas R. Smith, Benjamin T. Bulera, Anne M. (Tom) Christian, Jennifer L. Luke, Mark E. (Kristen Hill) Luke, Sierra M Bentti, 24 step grandchildren, and 13 step great-grandchildren.

Kip is preceded in death by his first wife Louise (LaCosse) Mercier on November 22, 1997, brothers: Robert A Mercier, George Ralph Mercier, and a granddaughter: MaryAnn (Bentti) Luke.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 11:00am on Saturday July 5, 2008 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Champion, with Fr. Greg Heikkala to officiate. Family will greet friends and relatives at the church from 10:00am until the time of services on Saturday. A luncheon will follow in the church hall.
