Ishpeming – Charles L. "Toots" Dunstan, age 87, of 2004 Deer Lake Ave., Ishpeming passed away on Thursday April 21, 2011 at the Mather Nursing Center in Ishpeming Twp. where he had resided for the past 9 days.
Charles was born December 4, 1923 in Ishpeming the son of the late Charles W. and Ethel (Mager) Dunstan. His mother passed away when he was three and Charles was raised by Ethel (Harris) Dunstan, the only mother he knew. He was a graduate of the Ishpeming High School, Class of 1942. Charles served in the United States Army as a Corporal with the 424th Signal Co. in the Asiatic Pacific Theater of operations. He retuned to Ishpeming following his honorary discharge in March of 1946. Toots worked for the Hercules Powder Co. as a dynamite packer for many years.
Charles enjoyed playing with his grandchildren. He was a lifetime member of the Ishpeming Elks Club. He enjoyed passing his time reading, especially Zane Gray Westerns, vegetable gardening, doing jig-saw puzzles and latch work rugs, along with woodworking, including but not limited to making Christmas ornaments, doll houses and furniture. Bowling was another pastime of his, having been active in many league's including most recently the Friday Retiree's League.
Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Betty Dunstan of Ishpeming, a daughter Julie Simone of Gwinn, a sister Betty Gustafson of Ishpeming, 4 grandchildren – Michelle Rudd, Patricia, Jeffrey and Jason Di Maria, 4 great grandchildren Samantha Eberle, Brandon Taylor, Michael and Madison Warras, 3 great great grandchildren – Hayden, Harlow & Hollister Eberle, 3 sisters-in-law – Shirley Dunstan of Negaunee, Betty Dunstan of Hemet, CA and Jean Dunstan of Ishpeming, along with numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a grandson James Di Maria and 4 brothers – Bob, Alton "Unky", Clayton "Art" and Bill "Yip" Dunstan, a broterh-in-law Don Gustafson and a sister-in-law Eve Dunstan.
The family will greet relatives and friends from 12:00 – 2:00pm on Monday, April 25, 2011 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow at 2:00pm on Monday with the Rev. Kenneth Lahners to officiate. The Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter #380 will hold military honors at the conclusion of the services. Interment will take place at the Ishpeming Cemetery.
