Ishpeming – Charles H. Skewis, age 74, of 502 N. First St., Ishpeming passed away on Sunday, September 10, 2023, at his home. He was in the loving care of his family at the time of his passing.
Charlie was born June 28, 1949, in Marquette to the late Audrey (Eckloff) and Richard Skewis. He grew up in Ishpeming and was a graduate of the Ishpeming High School, class of 1967. Charlie met Debbie Quayle and they were married on May 14, 1994. Charlie worked for the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company for 34 years, retiring from the Tilden Mine where he had been part of the Blast Crew. Before working there, Charlie served his country in the United States Coast Guard from 1969-1973.
Charlie had numerous interests including his love of bowling, doing diamond dotz, listening to all genres of music, and enjoyed working with wood. He was an avid Green Bay Packer and Detroit Tiger fan. His favorite thing to do was going for a daily ride to Presque Isle in Marquette. Charlie and Debbie were hosts to six foreign exchange students, coming from the countries of Germany, Poland, Denmark, Belgium and Spain.
Survivors include his wife Debbie Skewis of Ishpeming, a son Dylan Skewis of Ishpeming, his beloved canine Buddy, his sister and brother-in-law, Judy and Matt Korpi, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law – Kim and Mike Kainulainen, Brad and Tracy Quayle and Kevin and Rhea Quayle, an uncle Bob Skewis, nieces and nephews – Aimee, Johnny, Jordan, Wyatt, Heather, Kylee, Phil, Sophie, Bennett, Brandon, Anna, Flynn, Jacob, Elli, Colton, Jesse, Val, Emily, Tabin, Sarah, Madison and Carter all of whom he enjoyed and wished he could have some of their energy, along with several aunts, uncles and cousins. Charlie was preceded in death by his parents and his in-laws – Jim and Emily Quayle.
The family will greet relatives and friends at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home from 12:00PM – 1:00PM on Thursday, September 14, 2023, where a memorial service will be celebrated at 1:00pm with Rev. Christopher Hintz officiating. A Luncheon will follow the services at the Wesley United Methodist Church. Interment will take place at the Ishpeming Cemetery at a later date. Honorary Pallbearer's will be Charlies nephews – Brandon, Phil, Jacob, Jesse, Carter and Johnny.
