Oak Park Heights, MN - Catherine Helen Beinlich, age 81, longtime Ishpeming resident, passed away on Monday Nov. 8, 2010, in Oak Park Heights, Minnesota after a courageous battle with Alzheimer's Disease.
Cathie was born in Newark, New Jersey on June 17, 1929. She moved with her family to Easton, Pennsylvania at an early age where she graduated from Wilson High School in 1946. In 1951, Cathie and Eric were married, and in 1952 moved to Ishpeming where they became part of the community and raised their family. They left Michigan in 2008 and they made their new home in Woodbury, Minnesota until the present time.
Cathie's main goal was always taking care of and bringing up her family in the right way. She was dedicated not only to her sons but to her grandchildren as well. She loved to work with young children and when her boys were gone from home and off on their own, she volunteered as a teacher's aide for the Ishpeming schools. Cathie worked in that capacity, which saw her transition from volunteer to a paid position, for a number of years until she retired in 1994. She rarely missed a school board meeting, always assisted in school bond elections, and in 2002 she was given the Distinguished Service Award by the Ishpeming Public Schools for her years of loyalty and service. She was very active in her church at Bethany Lutheran in Ishpeming helping many with her involvement in numerous church activities.
Cathie was also an active member of the Ishpeming Booster Club during the time her sons were participating in athletics and long after. She worked in the Booster Club concession stand for all home football and basketball games for many years. She was an avid Green Bay Packer fan from the Lombardi years to the Brett Favre era, but her favorite player was always Bart Starr.
Cathie was a great believer in both academics and athletics. For that reason, the Cathie Beinlich Memorial Scholarship Fund is being established, in her honor, at Ishpeming High School to be awarded annually to a deserving student athlete.
Cathie was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Mary Chenvert, and grandson Nathan. She is survived by her husband, Eric, with whom she shared 59 wonderful years; five sons and daughters-in-law: Eric Gregg and Lynda of Lakeland, MN, Jeffrey and Diane of De Pere, WI, Brad and Sally of Madison WI, Kurt and Lynette of Hudson WI, and Greg and Teri of Woodbury, MN; brother Robert of Wilmington, DE; fifteen grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at Bethany Lutheran Church in Ishpeming at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday Nov. 13, 2010 with the Rev. Warren Geier to officiate. There will be a visitation at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home on Friday Nov. 12, 2010 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. and on Saturday from 10:00am until the time of services at the Bethany Lutheran Church. Interment will take place at the Ishpeming Cemetery.
