Obituary

Ishpeming- Burton E. Wommer, age 89 of 605 S. Pine St, Ishpeming, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, October 1, 2010 at his home under the loving care of his family and UP Home Health & Hospice.


Burton was born September 25, 1921 in Ishpeming to George & Margaret (Woolz) Wommer. Burt graduated from Ishpeming High School and served in the United States Army during World War II. His military unit served in the European Campaign and guarded Nazi war criminals at the end of the war as they awaited trial at Nuremberg. Burt worked for Nartozky Motor prior to working for Cleveland Cliffs where he worked many years retiring as a Boss from the Empire Mine.


Burt was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church, a member of the Knights of Columbus and an active member of the St. Vincent DePaul Society where he was a Past President. Burt enjoyed the outdoors: hunting, fishing, and spending time at camp on Fish Lake with family and friends. Burt had a wonderful sense of humor.


Burt is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mary (Bonetti) Wommer, 5 children: Mary (Jack) Wommer Laemmle of Sisseton, SD, David (Linda) Wommer of Ishpeming, Lisa Sundblad of Ishpeming, Christine (Pete) Corkin of Marquette and Carle Wommer of Jackson, MN, a sister, Elaine Gady of Sault Ste Marie, MI, 2 brothers: George (Carol) Wommer of Anaheim, CA and Donny Wommer of Sault Ste Marie, MI, 4 grandchildren; Michael Wommer, Christopher Wommer, Rachel (Derrick) Carter and Rory Walser, 2 great grandchildren: Jordyn and Avery along with numerous nieces and nephews. Burt was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Marvin and 2 sisters Clarice Herrala and Loris Chevrette.


A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:00PM on Wednesday, October 6, 2010 at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Negaunee with the Rev. Monsignor Peter Oberto officiating.


Family and friends may call at St. Paul's Catholic Church on Wednesday from 11:00am until the time of service at 1:00pm. St. Vincent DePaul Society will conduct a memorial service prior to the Mass.


Military honors will be conducted at the conclusion of the Mass by the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 380.


Pallbearers will be Bob LaCosse, Ken Larson, Tony Bogetto, Mickey Tassone and Jeff Green (In honor and memory of Neal Green).


Memorial considerations may be directed to the St. Vincent DePaul Society or UP Home Health & Hospice.
