Obituary

Michigamme- Betty L. Howe, age 92, longtime Michigamme resident passed away Tuesday February 20, 2018 at the Lighthouse at Ishpeming Health and Rehabilitation Center while in the loving care of her family and U.P. Home Health and Hospice.

Betty was born September 18, 1925 in Trout Creek, MI to the late Albert Keaton and Emily Waisanen. She was a graduate of the Michigamme High School class of 1943 before working as a social worker for AMCAB, the Michigamme Senior Center and the Ishpeming Senior Center. She also worked at St. Vincent's in Republic for many years.

Betty was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Champion where she was a Lay Minister for many years. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, quilting, and cross stitching, making many of her daughters clothes for them as they grew up and even both of their wedding dresses. Betty enjoyed pasty making at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Republic, writing articles for the L'Anse Sentinel for many years, was involved with the Lakeview Cemetery Committee. She loved her family and friends and enjoyed going to outings to celebrate birthdays and holidays. Betty had a way with words both verbally and in writing, often taking the time to cross stitch a special saying to give as a gift. She loved to look out at the lake in every season, and especially to watch her grand children and great grandchildren fish and swim.

Betty is survived by 3 children- Catherine Yunke of Howell, MI, Albert (Rina) Howe of Estill, SC, Beth (Gary) Koenig of Marquette, son-in-law- John Grammatikos of Lakka, Greece, sister-in-law- Jean Howe, brother-in-law- Jack Howe, brother-in-law- Clifford (Beth) Young, 10 grandchildren- Rob (Shannon) Perry, Diana Perry, Connie (Dale) Beitz, Michael (JR) Howe, Tiffany (Shawn) Rogers, Melissa Derocha, Desi (Eric) Lauriten, Danny (Miranda) Derocha, Booie Maxfield III, Angela (Christo) Dalietas, Lafcatha Grammatikos, 23 great grandchildren, 5 great-great grandchildren, along with numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband- Myles Howe, siblings- Mary, Bill, Sally, Son- Myles Howe Jr., daughter- Nancy Grammatikos, brother-in-law- James Howe, sister-in-law- Marion Howe, grandchildren- Colleen Perry, Philip Grammatikos, great grandchildren- Nathaniel Lauritsen, and Sarah Beth Lauritsen.

The family will greet relatives and friends on Saturday February 24, 2018 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Champion from 11:00 am until the time of the Memorial Mass at 12:00 pm with Fr. Larry Van Damme as celebrant. A luncheon will follow Mass in the church hall. Interment will take place in the Lakeview Cemetery at a later date.
