Champion - Betty G. Hamel, age 90, longtime Champion resident, entered the eternal gates of heaven on Sunday, September 6, 2020 at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility where she had been a resident since 2016.

Betty was born in Champion on October 17, 1929, daughter of the late Ruth Marie (Plankey) and Matt Kulie and was the last of four siblings.  She was a graduate of the Champion High School, Class of 1946.  Betty worked as a seamstress in her younger years at the H W Gossard Co. for a few years.  She married Harold "Mutto" Hamel on June 8, 1948 with whom she raised her 5 sons with her.

Betty was mostly a homemaker, enjoying cooking, baking, canning, quilting, and even delving into wine making. She had also worked part time at Ishpeming Moving and Storage for a spell as well. Betty had been an active member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Betty is survived by four sons - Dale Hamel of Green Bay, WI, Keith (Sue) Hamel of Iron River, Fred Hamel of Oshkosh, WI, and Matt Hamel of Houghton; 6 grandsons – Jason, Kevin, Ryan, Anthony, Nicholas and Adam; 7 great grandchildren;  a special niece Karen Porter who spent endless hours with Betty through the years,  along with several other nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her husband Harold in 1998, her in-laws and son Michael in 1991.

The family will greet relatives and friends from 11:00am till Noon on Thursday, September 10, 2020 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Champion, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Noon with Rev. Fr. Dan Moll officiating. Interment will take place at the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Champion. If attending, face masks are required and respect social distancing guidelines due to current COVID 19 restrictions.

The family would like to thank the staff, nurses and aides at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility, their desire to assist people in need  is enduring.
