Obituary

Ishpeming - Bernice "Bunny" McCormick Maatta, age 96, of 200 Saginaw St., Ishpeming, passed away on Sunday February 3, 2013 at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility in Ishpeming, Michigan, just up the road from the house on Excelsior Street where she was born on January 4, 1917. Bernice was the daughter of the late James McCormick and Matilda Locher. She had worked for many years at the H.W. Gossard Co. as a seamstress, retiring in 1979. She was a lifelong member of the St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Bunny liked to read, travel and to spend time at their camp on the Big Dead River. She traveled to the hometowns of her grandparents --Wiesen, Switzerland and Limerick, Ireland -- and made trips throughout the US to visit her children and brother, Jerry, in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. Though usually quiet, Bunny was open about showing her amusement with things she liked. She was good company, a good listener with entertaining stories to share. Whenever she heard dance music, her feet would not stay still. She was preceded in death by her husband, Martin in 1986. Bunny was the last of her siblings: brothers -James, George "Musty", Edward "Kelly", and Gerald and sisters - Eileen McCormick Simons, Leona McCormick Wearne, Agnes McCormick Williams. Other siblings Dorothy and infant twins Laura and Marie died at a young age and infant grandson Timothy Maatta. She is survived by her children James (Marsha) Maatta of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Jean Maatta (Michael Frame) of Hamden, CT; and Roger (Lisa) Maatta of Appleton, Wisconsin; by her grandchildren, Gregory (Margaret) Maatta of Anchorage, Alaska; and Kevin Maatta of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and by many nieces and nephews. The family will greet relatives and friends from 10 – 11am on Tuesday, February 5, 2013 at the St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Ishpeming. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00am on Tuesday at the St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Ishpeming with the Rev. Fr. Greg Heikkala to officiate.
