January 27, 1928 – January 4, 2022
Champion/Shepherd- Bernice V. Cardew, age 93, longtime Champion resident, passed away on Tuesday January 4, 2022 at MyMichigan Medical Center in Midland, MI while in the loving care of hospital staff and her family.
Bernice was born in Sidnaw, MI on January 27, 1928, daughter of the late Victor and Aili (Syrjala) Mannikko. She attended L'Anse High School graduating with the class of 1946. Following graduation she worked at the Gossard Building in Ishpeming before marrying her husband Roy Cardew in 1953 and starting her family.
Bernice was a longtime active member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Champion, and The Seed Sowers Choir. She volunteered with the Senior Dining Group, entertained at many senior events, many times as a yodeler. Bernice was very musical, she loved to sing, and play her autoharp. She enjoyed camping, snowmobiling, photography, cross country skiing, going for walks outdoors, spending the summer months at her camp where she enjoyed the wilderness and watching the moose along with making acrylic paintings, and spending time with family. In the 40's she planted trees with the CCC members during the war.
Bernice is survived by her daughter- Judy (Murray) Strawder, grandson- Jamie Strawder, and great granddaughter Madeline Strawder, special nephew Dean Kipling who accompanied her to camp in her later years and was always willing to lend a helping hand, her special friend in music, Glenn Adams and Sara, Cody and Kyle Lehnen who adopted her as their Great Gram and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband of 45 years- Roy Cardew, brother- Roy Mannikko, and an infant son- Roger Roy Cardew.
A celebration of Bernice's life will be held on Saturday May 21st from 1:00pm until 4:00pm at the Champion Township Fire Hall located at 5170 US Hwy 41 Champion, MI. Burial will take place at Northland Chapel Gardens in Negaunee Township.
