Michigamme, MI – Bernardine C. "Birdie" Skytta Davis, age 84, of Michigamme, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 6, 2014 at UP Health System - Bell, where she had been a patient since December 3.
Bernardine was born December 3, 1930, on her family's farm in Sussex, WI, to Hebert and Florence (Hausmann) Haasch. She graduated from Menomonee Falls High School.
Birdie married the late Arnold K. Skytta, moved to Michigan and began raising a family. In 1963, they purchased Skytta's Service in Michigamme, which "Birdie" managed with her children until she retired at the age of 64.
As a business owner, mother of nine children and wife, Birdie always made time to connect with people. She was known and loved by many – never leaving anyone stranded or hungry. Birdie possessed a strong work ethic, was brutally honest, and yet had a good sense of humor. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
Birdie is survived by eight children: K. Michael (Janet) Skytta of Marquette, Lynn (Michael) Delliss of Michigamme, Nancy (Frank) Boula of Downers Grove, IL, Debbie Skytta of Michigamme, Vickie (Curt) Voegtline of Michigamme, Scott (Laurie) Skytta of Ishpeming, Alan (Susie) Skytta of Baraga and Ronald (Jackie) Skytta of Michigamme; two sisters: Helen Phillips and Patty Kempf; a brother: Fritz (Marion) Haasch; 19 grandchildren: Michelle (Mark) Sellers, Kristen (Eric) Sandstrom, Ryan Skytta, Melissa Delliss, Kevin (Jenny) Skytta, Sarah (William) Wheeler, Katrina (Matt) Zumph, Kimberly (Scott) Link, Elena Boula, Ashley (Joe) Snell, Curtis Voegtline, Amber (Jared Tuominen) Voegtline, Jaime Skytta, Brandon Skytta, Morgan Skytta, Josh Turunen, Megan Turunen, Jordon (Pam) Skytta and Mark Skytta; 19 great-grandchildren; 1 great great-grandchild; and, numerous nieces and nephews. Birdie was preceded in death by husband Arnold Skytta, a son Gary Skytta, three brothers and four sisters.
A private, family memorial service will be at the Bjork and Zhulkie Funeral Home with Sister Marge Schmelzle officiating. Inurnment will take place at Northland Chapel Gardens in the Spring.
Memorial considerations may be directed to the Michigamme Museum or the Kids' Club of Michigamme c/o Michigamme Township, 202 W. Main St., Michigamme, MI 49861, in memory of "Birdie".
