Marquette- Bernard “Bernie” R. Stephansky of Marquette, Michigan, entered eternal life on June 13, 2026. He had been residing at Mill Creek Assisted Living, where he was surrounded by family, friends, and a caring staff whose compassion and dedication brought him comfort in his final days.
Bernie was born on September 27, 1935, in Crystal Falls, Michigan, to Bernard A. Stephansky and Isabelle (Odgers) Stephansky. He later moved with his family to Marquette, where he graduated from high school.
Following graduation, Bernie proudly enlisted in the United States Army and served his country with honor. After completing his military service, he returned home and attended Northern Michigan University, where he earned a Master’s degree in Social Work.
Bernie’s education led him to a rewarding career in social work that spanned more than 30 years. Through his dedication, compassion, and commitment to helping others, he touched countless lives and made a lasting difference in his community. His work reflected the values by which he lived—service, understanding, and care for those in need.
Bernie’s love of sports began during his high school years, where he played football and developed a lifelong passion for athletics. Throughout his life, he enjoyed following a variety of sports and was often found watching a game—or sometimes two—on television.
Upon retirement, Bernie embraced the simple pleasures that brought him joy. He enjoyed his daily walks to the Peter White Public Library, where he spent time reading several newspapers and staying informed about current events. He also looked forward to stopping for a cup of coffee and a sweet treat at his favorite local spots.
A lover of music and the arts, Bernie regularly attended performances by the Marquette Symphony Orchestra and enjoyed concerts at Presque Isle. Yearly trips to Iron River for family reunions were among his favorite traditions. He treasured the opportunity to reconnect with relatives, share stories, and celebrate family ties. These visits also gave him the chance to spend time with longtime friends and enjoy favorite local establishments, including Alice’s Restaurant and Riverside Pizza.
No trip to Iron River was complete without a visit to the Iron County Historical Museum, where Bernie enjoyed exploring the area’s rich history and reminiscing about the people and places that meant so much to him.
Bernie was known for his kind heart, quiet strength, intellectual curiosity, and genuine concern for others. He valued family, friendship, community, and lifelong learning. His warmth, wisdom, and gentle presence will be remembered by all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Bernard A. Stephansky and Isabelle (Odgers) Stephansky, as well as many dear cousins and close friends.
He is survived by his cousin, Karen Bush, and her family, who lovingly looked out for him and supported him during his later years. He is also survived by many cherished cousins with whom he shared close relationships and treasured memories.
Bernie will be remembered for his dedication to public service, his loyalty to family and friends, his love of sports, his appreciation for history, music, and lifelong learning, and above all, his generous spirit, he enjoyed donating to various charities throughout his entire life. His life touched many people, and his memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
Special thanks to Rich Tegge, Ken Seavoy, and the staffs at Mill Creek Assisted Living, Brookridge Heights Assisted Living and Memory Care, and UPHHH for their caring support, kindness, and compassion shown to Bernie throughout his later years.
