Obituary

Ishpeming- Bernard J. "Bernie" Stanaway Sr., age 65 of 1745 Southwood Dr. Ishpeming passed away Wednesday, March 17, 2010 at the Marquette General Hospital, while in the loving care of his family.

Bernie was born February 4, 1945 in Negaunee to Rose (Gravedoni) & Denzil Stanaway. Bernie graduated from Ishpeming High School in 1965, received his associate degree from Northern Michigan University in 1986 and a bachelors degree in criminal justice in 1987.

Bernie was a corrections officer at the Marquette Branch Prison for 18 years, retiring in 2007. Bernie also had worked in his younger years as an Iron Worker, for Tri-State Motor Transit, at the Tracy Mine in Negaunee, and for Globe Printing.

Bernie was a member of the American Legion Post #114, Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter #380, National Rifle Association, Negaunee Rod & Gun Club, Gun Owners of America and Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. Bernie was a Civil War enthusiast, enjoyed hunting, woodworking and playing music with different bands.

Bernie is survived by his wife Evelyn R. (Kennedy) Stanaway of Ishpeming, son Bernard J. (Jennifer) Stanaway Jr., of Marquette, son Joseph A. (fiancee' Jennifer) Healey of Detroit, grandchildren: Chelsea, Cody, Destiny, Jack, Onika, Alana, Tianna and an expected grandson in May. Bernie is also survived by step-sons: Richard (Andrea) Wills of Negaunee, David (Debbie) Wills of Sheboygan Falls, WI, James (Diane) Wills of Manitowoc, WI, 6 step grandchildren, 2 step great grandchildren, a step-brother Fred Olander of Salt Lake City, his dog Nanook, and cats - Tuffy and Maggie along with numerous nieces and nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his mother Rose, father Denzil and step-father Arne Olander.

A gathering of relatives and friends will be held from 4:00-6:00PM on Saturday, March 20, 2010 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home with a Military Honors service conducted by the Vietnam Veterans of American Chapter 380 at 6:00pm.
