Ishpeming

Obituary

ISHPEMING, MI – Barbara J. Emanuelson, passed away peacefully at the age of 78 on Monday, July 27, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family and UP Home Health and Hospice staff.

Barbara was born in Ishpeming, Michigan, on November 25, 1947, to Sidney and Shirley (Perrault) Vial. She spent her early childhood in Ishpeming before her family relocated to Troy, Michigan. She graduated from Troy High School, where her vibrant personality earned her the title of Class Clown—an honor that suited her perfectly. Barbara had a quick wit, a fearless spirit, and never hesitated to speak her mind or stand up for what she believed.

While living in Troy, Barbara met the love of her life, Ralph "Snuffy" Emanuelson. Together they returned to the Upper Peninsula, choosing the slower pace of life they both cherished. They made their home on County Road 581, where they spent more than 40 wonderful years of marriage, raising their family and creating a lifetime of treasured memories. Although Barbara had grown up in the city, she had a true country heart. She fell in love with the beauty of the Upper Peninsula and often said she would never leave again.

Barbara dedicated many years of her life as a caregiver working for the Health Department, where her compassion and willingness to help others made a lasting difference in countless lives.

If there was one word that perfectly described Barbara, it was spunky. She was tough, independent, hardworking, and endlessly entertaining. She could plow snow with a pickup truck, had the knowledge and confidence to manage the Tool Department at Sears Roebuck, and wasn't intimidated by anyone. At the same time, she had a playful side that made everyone around her smile.

Barbara had a lifelong love for Betty Boop, proudly collecting and accessorizing with anything bearing the beloved character. She faithfully watched her favorite game shows, and family and friends quickly learned not to call while they were on—you might get a minute of conversation before she cheerfully hung up to get back to the television. Barbara cherished her close friendship with Jefferson Brock and enjoyed working crossword puzzles, spending time outdoors, and embracing everything the Upper Peninsula had to offer.

Above all else, Barbara's greatest joy in life was her family. Her children were her pride and purpose, and she treasured every moment spent with them. Whether offering advice, sharing a laugh, or simply being present, she loved them fiercely and unconditionally.

Barbara is survived by her loving children, Kimberly Maxwell, Ralph E. Emanuelson, Dennis Emanuelson, and Thomas Emanuelson; her grandchildren, Ann-Rose Emanuelson and Sidney James Richards; along with many extended family members and friends who will forever remember her humor, strength, and unforgettable personality.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of more than 40 years, Ralph "Snuffy" Emanuelson; her brother, Bob Vial; and her parents, Sidney and Shirley Vial.
