Obituary

Ishpeming – Arvo E. Poutanen, age 80, of 427 New York St., Ishpeming passed away at 11:10pm on Monday June 14, 2010 at the Bell Hospital in Ishpeming, surrounded by his loving family.


Arvo was born February 5, 1930 the son of the late Lauri and Maria (Kangas) Poutanen. Arvo resided in Ishpeming for the majority of his life, spending a few years in Racine, WI and Waukegan, IL in the late 1950's during a mine lay-off. He worked for the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Co. for 44 years, first at the Mather A Mine, then the Empire Mine and retired from the Tilden Mine as a plant repairmen in 1992.


Arvo was a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church, and a former member of the New York Club. He enjoyed being able to tinker with things, and was able to fix about anything. In his younger years Arvo enjoyed participating in local stock car races with his brothers, along with golfing. He will be remembered fondly by family as a great caretaker to his wife Gertrude through her time of illness.


Survivors include two daughters – Judy (Lowell) Cardew of Ishpeming and Marie Poutanen of North Lake, a son Larry (Valerie) Poutanen of Ishpeming, sisters-in-law – Laila Poutanen of Palmer, Charlotte Poutanen of Negaunee and Edith Maki of Ishpeming, 4 grandchildren – Stacey Wilcox, Gregory Wilcox, Megan (Tony) Pope and Joshua Poutanen whom was his beloved companion and caretaker the past several years, 3 great grandchildren – Amanda Wilcox, Ryan and Matthew Emanuelson, along with several nieces, nephews and his special canine friend "Buddy". Arvo was preceded in death by his wife Gertrude in 1998, a son Arvo Jr., brothers – Henry and Paul, and a sister Mayme Korpi.


The family will greet relatives and friends from 10:00am until 12:00 noon on Thursday June 17, 2010 at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Ishpeming. Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon on Thursday June 17, 2010 at the Bethel Lutheran Church with the Rev. Lauri O. Maki to officiate. Interment will take place at the Ishpeming Cemetery.


Pallbearers will be Larry Poutanen, Joshua Poutanen, Lowell Cardew and Tony Pope.
