Obituary

Ishpeming – Arthur L. Quayle, age 94, formerly of 548 Mather Ave., passed away at the home of his daughter and son-in-law in Champion on Saturday, Nov. 13, 2010. He had been under the loving care of the Upper Peninsula Home Health Hospice and Private Duty.


Art was born on Jan. 1, 1916 in Ishpeming the son of the late William and Jennie (Johnson) Quayle. He was a graduate of the Ishpeming High School and for 42 years he worked for C.C.I. at the Chem. Lab. Upon retiring he spent many hours in his workshop building trucks, bunkbeds, shelves and most notably candlesticks. Wood turning was his specialty and he made many candlesticks which were given to newly baptized babies at Trinity Lutheran Church. He was a member of the Vasa Lodge, Oddfellows, Masons, and the North American Manx Association.


On Jan. 29, 1955 he married Anona (Sundlie) and they spent 46 years together, raising three children; Cheryl (Harvey) Rutherford of Gwinn, Randi (Alan) Laakso of Champion, and William (Cheryl) Quayle of Naperville, IL. He was preceded in death by Anona in 2001.


He is also survived by his grandchildren – Brian (Janet) Anderson, Denyse (Matt) Trybula, Jason (April) Laakso, Jeremy (Karen) Laakso, Jennifer (Eric Miller) Laakso, Nicole (Jason) Harrington and William J. Quayle, and 10 great grandchildren.


The youngest boy of 12 children, he was preceded in death by 4 brothers and 4 sisters. Surviving are sisters - Florence Tinkham of Winchester, IL, along with Ruth Rogers and Agnes Peterson both of Ishpeming. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.


The family will greet relatives and friends from 10 – 11 am on Wednesday Nov. 17, 2010 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Ishpeming. A memorial service will be held at 11:00am on Wednesday at the Trinity Lutheran Church with the Rev Kenneth Lahners and Rev Scott Lindenberg of the Wesley United Methodist Church officiating. Inurnment will take place at the Ishpeming Cemetery.


Memorials may be directed to the Anona Quayle Memorial Nursing Scholarship at Ishpeming High School.
