Ishpeming – Arthur Hytinen, age 89, former National Mine resident, of 425 Fisher St. Marquette, passed away Friday, March 21, 2008 at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans where he had resided since July of 2002.
Arthur was born May 19, 1918, the son of the late Anselm and Lydia (Maki) Aalto in Ishpeming. Arthur was raised by his step-father due to the death of his biological father at a young age. Arthur attended National Mine Schools and later entered the United States Army in 1941.
He served our country faithfully and honorably during WWII and in such battles as the Algerian French Moroccan Campaigns, the Germans Southern France Tuisian Naples Foggia Rom Arno Campaigns. Arthur earned numerous medals such as the American Defense Service Ribbon, European African Middle Eastern Service Ribbon w/1 Silver and 1 Bronze Battle Star, Good Conduct Ribbon and 6 Overseas Service Bars. Arthur was honorably discharged on May 21, 1945 with the rank of Tec5.
Arthur married his soul mate of 62 years Rosalie who preceded him in death on January 21, 2007. After his service time, he worked for the Iron Ore Industry first for Inland Steel at the Greenwood Mine for four years, and then for 28 years for the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Co. at various underground mines, and the lab in Ishpeming, retiring in 1978. Arthur was a member of the Ishpeming VFW and the Ishpeming Ski Club, enjoying ski jumping in his youth. He also was a member of the Finnish/American Club in New Port Richey, FL, having wintered in Hudson, Florida for the past 15 years.
Survivors include his daughters: Lynn (Raymond) Kenny of Champion, MI and Eleanor (Donald) Maki of Ishpeming, MI, sister: Irene Kainulainen of Ishpeming, brother: Carl Hytinen of Ishpeming, 9 grandchildren: Steven (Kirsten) Maki, Lynn (Steve Bartel) Verner, Aaron Maki, Kristin (David) Clark, Maryellen (John) Sandle, Paul Turino, Shelly (Kurt) Simula, Christy ( Lewis) Ronca, and Raymond Kenny, 18 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Arthur was preceded in death by his wife Rosalie and a sister Aili Benvenue.
Funeral services will be held Friday March 28, 2008 at 12:00noon at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home in Ishpeming with Rev. Andy Johnson officiating. The family will greet friends and relatives at the funeral home on Friday, March 28, 2008 from 10:00AM until the time of service at noon. The Ishpeming V.F.W. along with the Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter #380 will have a veteran's flag presentation following the service.
Honorary pallbearers will be Arthur's grand children and his nephews Mike Hytinen.
A luncheon will follow the service at the Bible Baptist Church in Ishpeming Twp. Interment will take place at the Northland Chapel Gardens in Negaunee Twp.
At the family's request, memorials may be directed to the D.J. Jacobetti Activities Fund in Arthur's memory.
