Ishpeming – Arthur T. "Hype" Hammar, 84, of 612 Poplar St. Ishpeming, passed away on Friday March 27, 2009 at the Bell Hospital in Ishpeming, following a courageous battle with cancer.
Art was born July 1, 1924 in Ishpeming the son of the late Arthur S. and Julia (Jeffrey) Hammar. He was a graduate of the Ishpeming High School, Class of 1942. He served his country during World War II with the Army Air Force in England. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from Northern Michigan University in 1950 and a Masters Degree in Education Administration from the University of Michigan in 1954. He taught first at the Hancock Public Schools for two years and then at the Ishpeming Public Schools where he became principal at the Birchview Elementary School in 1965, retiring in 1981, after 30+ years in the education field. While at Ishpeming he had coached basketball, track, golf, football and baseball. Hype was instrumental in the formation of the Junior High Basketball program in Marquette Co.
Hype was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church, the Wawonowin Country Club, since 1960, where he enjoyed golfing and the friendship of many. While a member of Wawonowin he served on the Board of Directors and was past president. He was also a member of the Ishpeming Elks, Ishpeming V.F.W., American Legion – Clifford Jackson Post, Ishpeming Noon Kiwanis and the Michigan Education Association. Hype had served on the Board of Directors at the Ishpeming Community Federal Credit Union.
Survivors include his wife Ann Marie (Nelson) Hammar whom he married on Sept. 10, 1949, three sons – Thomas (Debbie) Hammar of Ishpeming, Allan (Doris) Hammar of Chula Vista, CA and James (Cheri) Hammar of Lake Elmo, MN, 9 grandchildren – Michael (Tracy) Hammar, Terry (Chad) Balazarini, Brian (Stephanie), Justin, Emily (Andrew), Elizabeth, Ellen, Andrew, and Aaron Hammar, 5 great grandchildren – Sophia, Ellen, Caden, Pasha and Yury, along with a nephew Jeff (Linda) Paull and there son Ryan. He was preceded in death by a sister Liz Paull.
The family will greet relatives and friends from 1:30pm until the time of services at 4:00pm on Tuesday March 31, 2009 at the Wesley United Methodist Church with the Rev. Scott Lindenberg to officiate. Inurnment will take place at the Ishpeming Cemetery. A luncheon will follow the services in the church hall.
Honorary pallbearers will be Robert "Wet" Waters and Marvin Luoma.
