Ishpeming – Arnold Charles Rosten, age 87 of 563 Elliott Ave., Ishpeming passed away at 11:50pm on Tuesday July 17, 2007 at his home in Ishpeming while surrounded by his family and friends and under the excellent care of Upper Peninsula Home Health and Hospice. He had struggled with cancer for the past year.
Arnold was born on April 4, 1920 in Humboldt Twp. the son of the late Arthur and Lempi (Finni) Rosten. He attended the Humboldt School and helped his parents with their farm and cutting pulp to help support his family. During Wartime he worked for the Civil Conservation Corps Camp in Sidnaw, which had later become a work camp for German Prisoners of War, during World War II. Arnold and Marjorie (Tousignant) were married on July 18, 1942 and moved to Detroit where he worked for the Edsel Car Co. They moved back to the U.P., and began working for the C.C.I. Co. at the Cliffs Shaft, working as an underground miner until its closure. Arnold then attended the NMU Jacobetti Skills Center for welding and was hired at the Republic Mine as a welder following his schooling. He later became a shovel mechanic at the Republic Open Pit Mine. Following the closure of the Republic Mine he was transferred to the Tilden Mine as a shovel mechanic. He had work for Cliffs for 38+ years, retiring in 1983.
Arnold was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church. He enjoyed time spent at the Dead River Basin camp which he built and was especially fond of his Sauna. Fishing and Boating were past-times of his at his camp. He and his wife loved to travel via Winnebago during his retirement years, with their dog Shawnee.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years Marjorie of Ishpeming; 2 sons: Dennis (Feeney) Rosten of Sheboygan, WI, Randy (Tammy) Rosten of Howards Grove, WI, 2 daughters: Darlene Francisco of Clarksville, TN, Sharon (Daniel) Argall of Ishpeming, 2 sisters: Ruth Kimar of Negaunee, and Marian Benson of Ishpeming, grandchildren: Russell, Daniel, Travis Andrew and Nathan Rosten, Teresa, Cheryl and Michael Francisco, & Philip, Terra and Tammy Argall, 22 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Arnold was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Lempi Rosten, brothers: Elmer, Reino, Paul, Francis, and Bernhardt, sisters: Silvia Rosten and Ellen Tulkie, grandson: Gary Maxey, granddaughter: Cindy Maxey and a son-in-law – Michael Francisco.
Funeral Services will held at 11:00a.m. on Friday, July 20, 2007 at the Bethany Lutheran Church with Rev. Warren Geier to officiate. Inurnment will take place at the Ishpeming Cemetery.
The family will greet friends and relatives from 9:00a.m. until the time of services on Friday at the Bethany Lutheran Church
Pallbearers will be Russell Maxey, Michael Francisco, Philip Argall, Andrew Rosten, Shawn Swanson, and Pete Frustaglio.
