Ishpeming- Arnold Malcolm Hoiem, 93 years old, passed away at 4:45 am on Sunday October 21, 2007 at the D. J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette, Michigan where he had been a patient since May of 2007. Previously he had resided at The Woodlands Assisted Living Facility in Negaunee, Michigan and before that, at 600 Poplar St., Ishpeming, Michigan.
Arnold was born on February 1, 1914 in Princeton, Michigan to John and Judith (Olive) Hoiem. He lived in Gwinn area until his family moved to Ishpeming when he was a child.
Arnold was married to the late Laila (Bietila) Hoiem on October 28, 1942. He taught school in the Detroit area until their retirement in 1974 when he and Laila moved to Ishpeming.
He was a graduate of the Ishpeming High School, received his teaching degree from the University of Wisconsin, Madison and earned a Masters of Arts Degree in Education from the University of Michigan in 1952.
Arnold served in the United Stated Army as a Captain and was a World War II Veteran. He worked in the C.C.C. camps. He was a former member of the Ishpeming Ski Club. He was a former ski jumper, who skied for the University of Wisconsin.
Arnold was a member of the Negaunee Independent Apostolic Lutheran Congregation.
He is survived by a sister, Viola Doney of Ishpeming, a brother, Melvin (Carrie) Hoiem of Palmer, sisters-in-law Corrine Hoiem and Shirley Hoiem, both of Ishpeming, and numerous nieces & nephews. Arnold was preceded in death by his wife Laila, parents, brothers Emmet, Homer "Toby", and Norman Hoiem , a sister Irene (Einar) Anderson, and a brother-in-law, Lloyd Doney.
Funeral services will be held 11:00am, Wednesday, October 24, 2007 at the Negaunee Independent Apostolic Lutheran Congregation, Co. Rd. 492, Negaunee, with Charles Prusi officiating. Burial will take place at the Ishpeming Cemetery.
Friends may call the Independent Apostolic Lutheran Congregation on Wednesday from 9:30a.m. until the time of service at 11:00a.m.
