Republic- Anthony "Tony" Alarik Walimaa, age 76 of Republic passed away Sunday July 31, 2016 at his home while in the loving care of his wife & UP Home Health & Hospice.

Anthony was born April 8, 1940 in Negaunee to Alpo A. & Elvi C. (Hakala) Walimaa. He graduated from Republic High School, class of 1958. Tony worked as an electronic repairman for Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company for 30 years, retiring in 1996.

While in high school Tony played on the Republic High School basketball team and played softball in the old timers' league. He also enjoyed swimming either at the High School or in the Michigamme River in the summer months. Tony attended the Finnish services at Bethany Lutheran Church, and was proud he could speak, write and read Finnish. He loved a good Finnish conversation. He learned to speak English in the 1st grade. Tony had a collection of vehicles that he enjoyed working on.

Tony is survived by his wife Jean E. Helwig, whom he married on June 26, 1998, and cousins, Tina (Don) Weiland and Terry (Janet) Simula. Tony was preceded in death by his parents Alpo & Elvi Walimaa.

Honoring Tony's wishes there will be no public service, private graveside service will be held in the Republic Twp Cemetery.
