Ishpeming Twp. –Anthony "Tony" Certo, age 92, passed away Friday May 28, 2021 at the Eastwood Nursing Center, Negaunee where he resided for 1 year.
Tony was born April 12, 1929 in Negaunee to Antonio & Georgina (Steede) Certo. He was married to Alice (Mitchell) Certo for 61 years until the time of her death in 2010.
He worked at Cleveland Cliffs Co., at 6 different mines retiring from the Tilden Mine as a lab analyst in 1989. Tony was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church of Ishpeming, a member of the Ishpeming Township Volunteer Fire Dept. and a member of the Elks Lodge.
He was always willing to help family and friends with their construction projects. Even until Tony was nearly 80 years old, he was still helping as much as he could.
After retiring he became a volunteer employee of Ishpeming Township. Every day was spent at the office doing any job that required help including checking the wells, stuffing envelopes, checking the recreation area & having coffee with the workers. He was named Volunteer Person of the Year.
Tony is survived by 3 children: Jackie (Harold) LeDuc, Carolyn (Don) Szenina of Ishpeming and Anthony (Bev) Certo Jr., of California. Grandchildren: Melanie Certo, Kim (Rob) Soyring, Allan Certo, Julie (Dell) Kab, Candace (Angie) LeDuc, Paula (Rick) Ritari, Travis Certo and Nick Certo. Great-grandchildren: Samuel Lopez, Logan & Alayna Soyring, Maggie & Cadan Ritari, Parker Kab, Emma LeDuc, T.J., Alex & Payten Certo, Ethan & Liam Certo & Damien Certo. Sister-in-law MaryAnn Mitchell and many nieces and nephews. Tony was preceded in death by his parents, 3 sisters Grace Liljestrand, Toni Saxwold and Rose Cameron and brother Joe Certo.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am on Wednesday June 2, 2021 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Ishpeming with Fr. Ryan Ford celebrating. Visitation will take place at 9:30 am until the time of Mass at 11:00 am. A luncheon will follow in the K/D Hall. Interment will take place in the Ishpeming Cemetery.
Tony's family would like to extend a special thank you to Regan and the team at Lake Superior Lifecare and Hospice for the wonderful care they gave to Tony.
