Ishpeming – Anselm H. "Unka" Mantyla, age 93, of 110 Gold St., West Ishpeming passed away on Friday August 13th at his home while under the loving care of his family and Upper Peninsula Home Health and Hospice.
Anselm was born June 16, 1917 in Ishpeming the son of the late Charles and Hanna Mantyla. He was a graduate of Ishpeming High School, Class of 1937. Anselm went on to further his education at Michigan Tech University, receiving a degree in drafting in 1941. In the mid 1940's he worked in the Detroit area making equipment for use during World War II. He returned to Ishpeming following the war period and was employed as a Lab Tech for the C.C.I. for over 30 years. He had also owned the Forest Lane Trailer Park and the Furnace Vac Co. which was a furnace and chimney cleaning business. He was a member of the Grace Episcopal Church in Ishpeming, where he sang in the church choir for many years.
Anselm was a giving and generous person, donating to many local and national organizations. The Ishpeming Salvation Army recently recognized him for his generosity with a plaque. He was a lifetime member of the National Ski Hall of Fame, and designed the original Ski Hall of Fame Building. Anselm was a craftsman, with a 5 foot scale model of the Mackinac Bridge being one of his favorite projects. He also repaired many ski's for the jumpers at Suicide Hill. With his drafting degree, he was responsible for the design on many homes in the Ishpeming area, along with a remodeling of the Grace Episcopal Church.
Survivors include his son – Michael {Sandra} Mantyla of Ishpeming, 4 grandchildren – John, Nicole, Amanda and Melissa, great grandchildren – Jacob, Ashley and Tristan, two sisters-in-law – LaVerne Valente of Ishpeming, and Laina Mantyla of Negaunee, along with numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Joyce, a daughter Bonnie L. Jordan along with 12 brothers and sisters.
The family will greet relatives and friends on Monday August 16, 2010 from 11:00 am to 1:00pm with funeral services held at 1:00pm at the Grace Episcopal Church in Ishpeming with Richard Graybill officiating, A luncheon will follow the service at the Grace Episcopal Church. Interment will take place at the Ishpeming Cemetery.
