Ishpeming, MI- Alvar Atte Heikkila, age 92, of 835 N Pine St Ishpeming, MI, passed away on Tuesday, December 28, 2021, at UP Health System Bell.
Alvar was born in Ishpeming, Michigan on February 18, 1929, a son of the late John and Tyyne (Hakala) Heikkila. Alvar served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
Alvar worked as a general laborer for Cleveland Cliffs, working at Cliffs Shaft, Ore Improvement Plant, Empire and Tilden Mines. He also enjoyed logging with his brothers for Heikkila Brothers Logging.
Alvar was a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church in Ishpeming. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, walking in the wood, and was a NASCAR fan. He and Marina were generous to many local charities.
Alvar is survived by his wife Amanda Marina (Hebert) Heikkila, whom he married on June 18, 1960, a sister-in-law, Rita Lusardi, several nieces, and nephews including John (Heidi) Heikkila. Alvar was preceded in death by his parents, John and Tyyne, brothers; George, Willy and Reino, a sister Elvie Heikkila, and many sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.
Alvar's family will greet relatives and friends from 2:00 – 4:00 pm on Tuesday, January 4, 2022, at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Ishpeming where his funeral service will be held at 4:00 pm with Rev. Steve Weston officiating.
The UP-Funeral Honors Team will accord military honors.
A luncheon will follow the service in the church fellowship hall.
Interment will take place in the Ishpeming Cemetery.
