Obituary

Ishpeming – Alphonse W. "Chib" St.Onge, age 92, formerly of 216 N. 5th St., Ishpeming, passed away at 4:24am on Friday, January 4, 2008 at the Mather Nursing Center where he had resided for the past 3 months. Alphonse had been under the care of the U.P. Home Health and Hospice.

Alphonse was born on October 14, 1915, in North Lake Location to the late William and Exilda (Beauchamp) St.Onge. He attended North Lake Grade School and graduated from Ishpeming High School in 1933. He was then employed by the Cleveland Cliffs Mining Corp. Al served his country in the United States Army from 1941 to 1945 serving in World War II. He spent 34 months in the China-Burma-India Theater as a member of the 835th Signal Service.

Al married Mary West on October 16, 1948. He worked for the Robbins Flooring Mill for many years, retiring in 1989 at the age of 74. Al was a loyal fan of the Ishpeming Hematites and attended all home football and basketball games for 70 years. He especially enjoyed trout fishing and gardening and excelled at both. Al was a lifelong member of the Ishpeming VFW Post 4573. He was also a member of the former Junction Club, Ishpeming Ski Club, and the St. Joseph's Catholic Church.

Al is survived by his wife of 59 years Mary, whom he dearly loved. He is also survived by his sister Rita Laitinen of Marquette and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a twin sister Alma Hoppe, sisters: Annette Mackey, Jeannette St.Onge and brothers: Albert, Elmer, and Raymond, and a sister-in-law Betty West.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the St. Joseph's Catholic Church on Monday, January 7, 2008 at 11:00a.m. with Fr. Greg Heikkala to officiate. The family will greet friends and relatives from 10:00a.m. until the time of services. The Ishpeming VFW will have a flag presentation at 10:45.

The family of Mr. St.Onge would like to thank the Mather nursing Home and U.P. Home Health and hospice for their care and kindness.
