Ishpeming- Allan James Olds, age 88 of 115 Helen St., Ishpeming, passed away Saturday July 5, 2014 at the Mather Nursing Center while in the care of UP Home Health & Hospice.
Allan was born August 18, 1925 in Ishpeming to Joseph & Hilda (Makinen) Olds. Allan was a 1943 graduate of Ishpeming High School. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from Northern Michigan University in 1950, a Master of Arts degree from the University of Michigan in 1956 and took many graduate courses from various universities.
Allan had thirteen years of teaching experience at Walloon Lake, Boyne City and Mt. Clemens. While at Mt. Clemens High School he served as varsity tennis coach winning an Easter Michigan League Championship one year. Mr. Olds was Assistant Principal of Mt. Clemens High School for 5 years and Principal of Coleman High School for one year, and in 1969 he moved back to Ishpeming to become Principal of Ishpeming High School. Mr. Olds would serve as Superintendent of the Ishpeming School District from 1972 until his retirement in 1982. Following retirement Allan and his wife, Verna, enjoyed wintering in Florida and camping in the summer months. Throwing horseshoes and attending athletic events were some of Allan's favorite hobbies.
Professionally, Allan was a member of the American Association of School Administrators, Michigan Association of School Administrators, Marquette-Alger Intermediate Superintendents, past president of Charlevoix County Rural Teachers, past secretary of Central Michigan Area Schools and past member of Michigan Association of Secondary School Principals.
Allan is survived by his wife Verna (Enders) Olds, whom he married August 9, 1952, 2 children: Brian (Rebecca) Olds of Ishpeming and Audrey (David) Theuerkauf of Minocqua, WI, 5 grandchildren: Travis & Connor Olds, Wesley, Brian and Carly Theuerkauf along with numerous nieces and nephews. Allan was preceded in death by his parents and 2 brothers: Wesley and George Olds.
A private graveside inurnment service will be held at the Ishpeming Cemetery.
