Obituary

Ishpeming – Allan S. "Macho" Malmborg, age 75, of 8578 Co Rd 496, Ely Twp., passed away on Monday April 24, 2017 unexpectedly while leaving the American Legion, Post #114 in Greenwood Location.

Al was born August 16, 1941 in Marquette to E. Russell and Fannie (Maki) Malmborg.  Al was raised in Marquette as a child, and at the age of 18 enlisted in the United States Navy.  While serving he was stationed in Pensacola, FL, and had served during the Vietnam War on a standby ship the USS Antietam near Vietnam.  Al was honorably discharged in November of 1962 and met Mary Soulliere, his wife to be shortly after leaving the military.

Early in his marriage, Al and his father built their first home in Marquette.  He enjoyed building and this included model airplanes which he loved to fly in the nearby field.  He also enjoyed hunting and fishing and he had a large boat for fishing on Lake Superior and he was affectionately referred to as "The Fisherman".  Al also liked duck hunting with his friend Wayne. Every Deer season, they went to deer camp in Menominee, which his son-in-law Dean had built for him.  Al, brother Billy, and Dean, along with many other close friends enjoyed "Beer" drinking much more than "Deer" hunting during this time.

Al had worked for the L.S. & I. Railroad for 39 years, retiring at the age of 64.  To many of his co-workers he was known as "Windy" as he liked to talk.  Al was a member of the American Legion, Post #114 in Ishpeming (Greenwood Loc.) where he enjoyed socializing with his friends, along with following his favorite sports teams including the Detroit Lions, Red Wings and Tigers.  Every Sunday he would play Smear, and this year was the "Big Winner".

When Al was not at the American Legion, he had leisure days with his wife Mary who was always there for him.  He could shake his spoon in his coffee cup, and she knew he wanted a refill of coffee.  He enjoyed his BINGO lottery scratch off tickets, which he and Mary would check together.  She was the light of his life and they spend 51 wonderful years together. His grandson Tyler had him spoiled, as he would share his candy with him and grandpas would twinkle with joy.  His granddaughter Chloe would give him her big smiles that grandpa loved.  As well as they could have his blood boiling when they had their naughty moments.  Al loved spending time with all his grandkids and his eyes would light up when they visited.

Survivors include his wife Mary Malmborg of Ely Twp., 2 daughters – Ellenor (Dean) Stephens and Peggy Baron both of Ishpeming, brother William (Bernice) Malmborg of Green Bay, WI, grandchildren – David Baron, Chelsea Baron, Daniel Baron, Emily Baron, Chloe Baron, Tyler Fletcher, Sierra Malmborg and Scott Malmborg, great grandchildren Wesley Baron and Aria Haeft.  He was preceded in death by his parents, son Scott Allan Malmborg, granddaughter Marybeth Saxton, sisters – Thelma Sundquist and brother Russell Malmborg.

The family will greet relatives and friends from 10 – 11am on Friday, April 28, 2017 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home.  Funeral services will follow at 11:00am at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home with the Rev. Lauri O. Maki to officiate.  Interment will take place at Northland Chapel Gardens where military honors will be accorded by the Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter #380.  A luncheon will follow at the American Legion, Post #114 in Greenwood Location.

Pallbearers will be David Baron, Daniel Baron, Scott Malmborg, and Dean Stephens.
