SALINE, Mich. - William Robert Corkin, age 77, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 20, 2009, in Ishpeming, Mich. He was born on March 26, 1932, in Ishpeming. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ransom and Anna Louise Corkin; his siblings Lesley and Mary Lou; and his first wife, Marilyn (Barry) Corkin. He is survived by his wife of 15 years, Diana, and his son, Curtis (Faye) Corkin, and three daughters, Cathy (Richard) Knapp, Cynthia (Hakan) Millen and Christy (James) Howell.


Bill was a dedicated grandfather to Kevin, Brandon and Katherine Knapp, Adrian and Nicholas Millen, and Ethan Corkin-Howell. He was a stepfather to Suzanne (David) Carpenter, Richard (Jennifer) Aquino and William Aquino III. Bill was a devoted Geepop to Andrew, Anne, Daniel and Erin Carpenter, and Bennett Aquino.


He was a longtime resident of Ypsilanti and Saline. In 1950, Bill graduated from Negaunee High School where he was a class officer for all four years, and active in four years of varsity sports. He then attended Michigan Technological University and graduated with a Mechanical Engineering degree in 1954. He was a member of the Kappa Delta Psi fraternity. He had a lifelong career as General Superintendent, Master Mechanic at Hydra-Matic, a division of General Motors Corporation in Ypsilanti.


Bill was a longtime member of St. Mark Lutheran Church in Ypsilanti. He gave back to his communities of Negaunee, Ishpeming, Ypsilanti and Saline, Mich., and Marco Island, Fla., financially and personally with his time and effort, most recently Habitat for Humanity. Bill continued to enjoy sports throughout his adult life especially bowling and golf. He was a member of Travis Pointe Country Club in Saline, where he was highly regarded. His motto in life was to "Pick an age and live it."


In lieu of flowers please make donations to the American Heart Association or the Salvation Army. Envelopes will be available at the Robison-Bahnmiller Funeral Home 301 E. Michigan Ave., Saline, where friends may begin calling on Friday, Aug. 28, 2009, between the hours of 2 and 4 p.m. and 6 and 8 p.m. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Aug. 29, 2009, at 10 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Saline, 1200 N. Ann Arbor St. at Woodland Drive with Pastor Julianne Smeck officiating.
