U.S. VeteranHumboldt Twp. – Elmer G. Gustafson, age 83 of 484 Co. Rd. FD in Humboldt Twp. passed away on Wednesday, July 4, 2012 at the Mather Nursing Center in Ishpeming Twp. where he had resided since June 16th.

Elmer was born May 10, 1929 in Covington, MI the son of the late Elmer and Sophia (Bieley) Gustafson. He grew up in Covington until the 10th grade when the family moved to Michigamme where he graduated from high school in 1947. Elmer served in the United States Navy during the Korean War. Elmer worked for C.C.I. for 27 years, retiring as a heavy equipment mechanic from the Tilden Mine in 1991.

Elmer’s hobbies included fishing, throwing horseshoes, and picking blueberries. He always enjoyed Sauna time. Elmer was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Negaunee.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years Mary J. (Pekuri) Gustafson of Humboldt Twp., a daughter Trudy (Pete Frustaglio) Gustafson of Ishpeming, 3 sons – Gary (Robin) Gustafson of Menominee, Robert (Tracie) Gustafson of Neenah, WI and Richard (Chrissy) Gustafson, a sister Rhoda (George) Hreha of Alexandria, OH, a brother Francis Wallace of Marquette, 8 grandchildren – Jeremiah (Rebecca), Joshua (Sarah), Luke (Fiancée Ashley Timms), Cody, Seth, Nate, Rebecca and Sam Gustafson, 4 great grandchildren – Brendan and Allison Gustafson and Tyler and Tanner Leach, along with numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a grandson Davey Meyer Jr., 2 brothers – Robert and Guy and 2 sisters June and Georgianna.

The family will greet relatives and friends from 11:00am – 1:00pm on Saturday July 7, 2012 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Negaunee. A memorial service will follow at 1:00pm at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Negaunee with the Rev. Steven Solberg to officiate. Inurnment will take place at the Humboldt Twp. Cemetery. A luncheon will follow the services in the church hall.
