National Mine- Eleanor Christian, age 92 longtime National Mine resident passed away Saturday, April 21, 2012 at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility while in the loving care of her family, nursing home staff and Lake Superior Hospice.
Eleanor was born November 29, 1919 in National Mine to John Victor and Maria (Kuisti) Helsten. She graduated from National Mine High School with the class of 1937. Eleanor worked for Sears for 25 years retiring as a credit manager.
Eleanor counted herself rich in her faith, family and church community and shared her time, talent and treasures whenever the opportunity arose. Her faith, strength and commitment to spending time in God’s Word and working toward His mission is an example to us all. Eleanor spent many years supporting the church and Mission Bible Training Center financially and with hundreds of knit socks and slippers for the residents. She also ensured that the hands and heads of area children were warm knitting thousands of hats and mittens over the years.
Eleanor was a longtime member of the Faith Lutheran Church where she devoted many years to teaching Sunday school and Confirmation. She was also active in the choir, numerous Bible studies and spent hours making quilts as a member of Faith’s Quilters. She was a gifted knitter, seamstress and quilter and enjoyed teaching her children and grandchildren the same. She also enjoyed sharing her famous cardamom bread, pasties and date cookies with family and friends including residents at Marquette County Medical Care Facility. Eleanor helped to start the Finn Club at Valente’s and participated in the program for more than twenty years. She also volunteered with for R.S.V.P.
Eleanor is survived by 3 children: Alberta Kontio of Lakewood, CO, Roger (Marguerite) Christian of Crystal Falls, MI and Karen Christian of Allen, TX, 14 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren and 7 great great grandchildren, along with numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Albert in 1974, 7 brothers and 3 sisters.
Funeral services for Eleanor will be celebrated at 4:00PM on Tuesday, April 24th at the Faith Lutheran Church with Rev. David Johnson officiating. Interment will take place at Northland Chapel Gardens.
The family will receive relatives and friends at the Faith Lutheran Church on Tuesday from 2:00PM until the time of service at 4:00PM.
In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be given to Faith Lutheran Church in memory of Eleanor Christian.
